Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring a website so AI-powered answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews) cite it as a source when they generate an answer. It differs from SEO in its goal: a citation inside an AI-generated answer, not a high-CTR position on a search results page.

What AEO optimizes for
Answer Engine Optimization optimizes a website so AI answer engines quote it as a source when they generate an answer, rather than only ranking it as a link. The target is the citation inside a ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google AI Overview response, where a person often reads the answer without clicking through to any site at all. SEO chases the click; AEO chases the mention.
How AEO differs from SEO
AEO and SEO share almost all of their technical groundwork but aim at different finish lines. SEO competes for a high rank on a results page so someone clicks through to your site. AEO competes to be the source an AI model trusts enough to cite in its own answer. The foundation is the same, which is why AEO sits on top of SEO rather than replacing it. What the work involves
The work is specific and checkable: a clean schema graph, content structured as self-contained answers, genuine first-party data, quoted experts, cited sources, and a hand-written llms.txt. The 2024 GEO study (Aggarwal et al., presented at KDD 2024) tested these exact moves and found that adding citations, quotations, and statistics to a page could lift its visibility in generative answers by up to 40 percent. Why it matters now
AI search is growing quickly, but it has not displaced traditional search yet. In Ahrefs’ 2025 clickstream analysis, ChatGPT handled roughly 12 percent of Google’s search-style query volume, while Google still sent about 190 times more referral traffic to websites. Read together, those two numbers are the case for doing both. Being absent from AI answers already costs visibility, and that gap widens every quarter, so the practical question is whether your answer-engine presence is keeping pace with your search presence.
